The Common Room: a table for every kind of maker.

Neighbours making pottery together at The Common Room

There’s a chipped blue teapot by the door, a shelf of donated tools, and a chair that never quite matches the others. Welcome to The Common Room.

It started with a spare table

Maya needed somewhere to roll clay. Leo had a workbench he could lend. Asha arrived with a stack of paper and, somehow, a perfectly ordinary room became a place people kept coming back to.

That is still the idea. You can arrive with a project, a question, or nothing more than a free afternoon. Someone will make room.

Good company is part of the process

On one side of the table, Jun is patching a favourite jacket. On the other, Sam is explaining which way wood grain runs. Nobody calls themselves the expert. Everyone knows something that might help someone else.

The conversations wander. How to mend a handle. Where to find affordable clay. What to make with the first tomatoes from Nina’s garden. Some days, talking is the thing we make.

Our very small set of rules

  • Leave a little space for somebody new.
  • Ask before borrowing. Offer before throwing away.
  • Share the process, including the part that went wrong.
  • Put the kettle on if you’re first through the door.

Bring your unfinished thing

A half-knitted scarf. A sketch you cannot quite finish. The idea that has been sitting in a notebook for months. It does not need to be impressive. It just needs a place to begin.
