Winter swimming has caught on in Northgate. On a cold morning the lido has a crowd of its own, and the harbour beach has regulars in woolly hats. If you want to join them, here is where to go and what to expect.
The lido
The heated lido by the park opens early every morning through the winter, with later starts at weekends; the times are on the board by the gate and on the council's leisure pages. The water is the warmest in town, which makes it the place to start. As for the changing rooms: clean, but unheated, so bring a big towel and a flask.
The quarry pool
The flooded quarry north of the weir is run by a swimming club, and you swim there as a member or as a member's guest. The water is deep, clear and very cold. There is a wooden hut with a stove, which is reason enough to join.
The harbour beach
The small beach below the harbour steps is free and open to anyone, with no lifeguard in winter. Swim with someone, stay close to the shore and keep clear of the ferry route. There are no changing rooms at all: a changing robe and a quick exit are the local method.
Staying safe
Get in slowly, keep your first swims short and never swim alone in open water. Warm up gradually afterwards with dry layers and a hot drink rather than a hot shower. If you have a heart condition, talk to your doctor before you start.
