Getting a residents' parking permit, step by step

Which streets are in a permit zone, what to have ready when you apply and what to do about visitors.

If you live in central Northgate or near the station, your street is probably in a residents' parking zone. A permit lets you park in your zone without a time limit. Here is how to get one, step by step.

Check your street

The council's parking pages have a map of every zone and a search by street name. Zones are also marked on the signs at the entrance to each street, with the hours they apply.

Have the right papers

You will need proof that you live at the address, such as a tenancy agreement or a council tax bill, and the registration document for a car kept at that address. If the car belongs to your employer, a letter from them will do.

Apply

Apply online through the council's parking pages, or in person at the customer service desk in the town hall. The council sets the price each spring, so check its pages for the current charge before you apply. Permits are digital: once yours is approved there is nothing to display in the window.

Visitors

Residents can buy visitor permits for friends, family and tradespeople, online by the day. Carers visiting someone in the zone can apply for a carer's permit through the same pages.
