Commuting through winter: what actually keeps your hands warm?

Every winter I try a new pair of gloves and every winter my fingers go numb by the time I reach the ring road. It is only 11 km each way. What actually works for you below zero, and what was a waste of money?

Lobster mitts changed everything below zero. Two fingers together stay far warmer.

For me, pogies on the bars. Ugly, but you can ride in thin gloves inside them. Good luck.

Late to this, but thin merino liners under a windproof glove. The wind is the problem, not the cold. Took me years to learn that.

Same problem here. heated grips on the e-bike. Not cheap, but my hands have not been cold since. Cheap too.

Honestly, keep the gloves on the radiator before you leave. Starting warm matters. Works for me at minus five.

Quick one: loosen the gloves. Tight gloves cut the circulation and that is when fingers go numb. Your mileage may vary.

Two winters in, and a windproof shell over any glove works better than one thick glove.

Tried everything and swing your arms for thirty seconds at the first red light. Sounds silly, works. Good luck.

Wear a proper hat under the helmet. Warm core, warm hands. Took me years to learn that.

For me, ski gloves from the discount shop. Bulky for the gears but warm. Cheap too.

Late to this, but I carry a spare dry pair. Wet gloves are cold gloves, whatever the label says. Works for me at minus five.

Same problem here. hand warmer sachets in the palm on the really cold mornings. Your mileage may vary.

Honestly, longer cuffs that go over the jacket sleeve. The gap at the wrist was my problem.

Quick one: bar mitts plus a thin fleece glove. Best money I have spent on commuting. Good luck.

Two winters in, and motorbike winter gloves. Heavy, but nothing gets through them. Took me years to learn that.

Tried everything and a buff over the wrists, oddly enough. Keeps the draught out. Cheap too.

Ride a slightly slower first kilometre. Less wind chill while you warm up. Works for me at minus five.

For me, wool gloves under cheap rubber washing-up gloves in the rain. Laugh all you like. Your mileage may vary.

Late to this, but insulated grips with a bit of foam. The metal bars pull the heat out.

Same problem here. a warmer jacket, not warmer gloves. When my core is cold my hands suffer first. Good luck.
