Commuting through winter: what actually keeps your hands warm?

Every winter I try a new pair of gloves and every winter my fingers go numb by the time I reach the ring road. It is only 11 km each way. What actually works for you below zero, and what was a waste of money?

Honestly, three-finger gloves: index and middle together, thumb and the rest together. Took me years to learn that.

Quick one: electric heated gloves with a small battery. They last my whole commute. Cheap too.

Two winters in, and stopped fighting it and moved the commute to the canal path. Less wind. Works for me at minus five.

Tried everything and layering. Liner, glove, shell. Take the shell off when you warm up. Your mileage may vary.

Eat something before you leave. Riding on an empty stomach makes me colder.

For me, waterproof overmitts in the rain, nothing else matters when it is wet. Good luck.

Late to this, but gloves one size up so there is air inside them. Air is the insulation. Took me years to learn that.

Same problem here. brake levers with rubber hoods. Bare alloy levers are freezing. Cheap too.

Honestly, dry the gloves properly overnight, stuffed with newspaper. Works for me at minus five.

Quick one: a small thermos of tea for the ride home in January. Morale matters. Your mileage may vary.

Two winters in, and lobster mitts changed everything below zero. Two fingers together stay far warmer.

Tried everything and pogies on the bars. Ugly, but you can ride in thin gloves inside them. Good luck.

Thin merino liners under a windproof glove. The wind is the problem, not the cold. Took me years to learn that.

For me, heated grips on the e-bike. Not cheap, but my hands have not been cold since. Cheap too.

Late to this, but keep the gloves on the radiator before you leave. Starting warm matters. Works for me at minus five.

Same problem here. loosen the gloves. Tight gloves cut the circulation and that is when fingers go numb. Your mileage may vary.

Honestly, a windproof shell over any glove works better than one thick glove.

Quick one: swing your arms for thirty seconds at the first red light. Sounds silly, works. Good luck.

Two winters in, and wear a proper hat under the helmet. Warm core, warm hands. Took me years to learn that.

Tried everything and ski gloves from the discount shop. Bulky for the gears but warm. Cheap too.
